(Sermon 66) He was genuinely perplexed over what had happened in the Church during the years of persecution. He was, after all, trying to understand his own experience in the tradition of the Church, as he himself was baptized and educated in the Church. Chadwick introduces his book with a brief background of the early church, before he turns to its history. He shows that the church was a church of two halves, the laity and the clergy, and that the laity was even against the clergy. He clearly shows that the laity had great animosity against the clergy and this was very evident in the hostility between the clergy and the imperial authorities. This does not mean that the imperial authorities never acted against the clergy. Even though they did not punish the clerics and some clergymen, those in power had all the power to control the Church. Chadwick tries to show the role of the imperial authorities as being a major force in the early church. He tries to show that there was collusion between the imperial authorities and the "fringe" group in the early church. They were looking for ways to use the church. Chadwick says that the imperial authorities put the clergy under the control of the Bishop, in order to use the church as a tool for political purposes. Chadwick says that the empire used the Church as a political force. Chadwick, Henry Henry Chadwick, born in the 1930s, is a professor at Cambridge University. He is a traditional Anglican in doctrine, but not in manner. He does not believe that bishops should be given automatic right to have a college in the Church of England, because they have been trained by the university. Chadwick has great empathy for the laity, but he is not a laity himself. He is a scholar and a theologian and is noted for his work on Augustine and Chrysostom. He wants to point out the growth of the "fringe" groups in the Church. He calls them the "New Monasteries" and the "New Christians."
