The letter was sent to Trump on December 9, the same day he announced the U.S. would move its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, which Israel claims as its capital and which the U.S. recognizes as the capital of Israel. The letter, from the “alliance of American principles,” warned that relocating the embassy would be “catastrophic,” saying “a step toward a one-state solution” in the region. The letter was signed by George Perkovich, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, and was addressed to Trump and Vice President Mike Pence. Other signatories include former directors of the NSA and the CIA, two former directors of the State Department’s policy planning office, and a former special representative for Iraq and an ambassador to Sudan. The only Israelis to sign the letter were Yuval Ne’eman, who was an adviser to the Israeli Prime Minister, and Yuval Diskin, a former senior intelligence official. The letter argued that Trump was breaking decades of U.S. foreign policy by moving the embassy to Jerusalem, and said the move would undermine U.S. credibility in the region and with other countries. “With this announcement, the United States will be seen as ungrateful and will encourage rejection of America by the Arab world,” it read. “Relocating the embassy from Tel Aviv will not advance the peace process, it will only serve to harden the position of both the Palestinian and Israeli leadership, and ultimately to the detriment of the American public.” Among the former officials who signed the letter were Henry Kissinger, James Woolsey, Brent Scowcroft, and Daniel Patrick Moynihan. The letter was signed by 12 Americans and five Israelis, including Oded Yinon, the Israeli intelligence agency chief who
